Sciatica Treatment: Sciatica Relief Exercises

Sciatica pain is caused by the compression of the lower spinal column. Because it compresses, it pinches the sciatic nerve, which is one of the largest nerve groups that runs throughout your hips ad into your leg. When this nerve is pinched, you feel it as a shooting pain that runs from the lower back into the hip and down the leg. If this is the kind of pain that you have, there are several ways you can get relief, most of which comes directly from exercises. Sciatica treatment relief is the main goal of patients whose lives are virtually controlled by their chronic back and leg pain syndromes. Sciatica is often a long term health issue which resists medical treatment and might even worsen with the passage of time.

The most important way to find sciatica relief is to get active exercise. Bed rest could worsen for this type of pain than exercise. Should you have immediate pain and need to get some bed rest, this is fine. But, after one or two days, you need exercise and movement or it will worsen. The reason being that the spinal structure and the muscles located here become quickly de-conditioned, leaving you in pain regularly.

The exercises to consider are:

  1. Sciatica Treatment Exercise 1: Swimming- swimming has a great blend of characteristics – it is aerobic, it is strength building and it is low/no impact. The free-style stroke with alternate side breathing is the best stroke for back problems. The regular up and down movement of your legs loosens and strengthens muscles in your lower back area.
  2. Sciatica Treatment Exercise 2: Walking: walking is great all-round exercise. You will need to walk regularly, say a daily walk of 20-30 minutes to your routine will do wonders for your back and your overall health. Like any other exercise as you gain endurance, you can begin to walk further and add tougher walks such as going uphill. I find that walking with hand weights and swinging their arms, extends the aerobic benefits of my walk.
  3. Sciatica Treatment Exercise 3: One great exercise is to lie on your belly and prop yourself up on your elbows. Then, slowly raise just your torso ad head up, hold and come down. This keeps the pelvic region on the ground, stretching the muscles. Another option is to stand with legs squared and place your hands on your hips. Then, bend backward, so that your shoulders are slightly farther back than your hips.

I used to suffer with sciatica back problems myself. I was able to cure my pain however by using all natural treatment methods. I didn’t find sciatica relief by using medications, expensive physical therapy visits, or surgery. I was able to heal myself naturally.
